57th Street Wines
Volunteer Work: Brochure, website mockup / copy, and bio for 57th Street Wines, an independent wine shop in Hyde Park, Chicago.
The Challenge:
The folks at 57th Street Wines are the opposite of vine snobs. But, they have the credentials to fit the bill. I met with the shop's wine buyer, Derrick, several times to learn about his background and nail down a tone for the store. The goal was to land on something approachable and inclusive without diminishing the expert knowledge they bring to the table.
- Develop an overall tone of voice for the store
- Design a brochure and write copy promoting the store's pilot wine subscription program
- Mockup a home page and write web copy to potentially replace the store's current site
- Draft a media bio for Derrick's interview with Black Food & Beverage

Extended Derrick Bio for Media Interview
Derrick Westbrook began his “wine drinking” career as a server in an Italian restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama. When the recession cut short a promising career in the nonprofit sector, he chose to return to the food and beverage industry. A love of people and a passion for wine fueled Derrick’s rise through the Chicago fine dining scene. He served as Cellar Manager for the famed Alinea-group restaurant NEXT and Beverage Director of the Michelin-starred Elizabeth Restaurant - all before turning 30. Derrick is a certified sommelier and now owns and operates VineCultur, a company that hosts pop-up wine-tastings and dinners while developing beverage programs for some of the city's best restaurants and bars. He also serves as the manager and wine buyer of 57th Street Wines, an independent wine shop located in Hyde Park, Chicago where every bottle is tasted and hand-selected by Derrick himself. To Derrick, being a sommelier is all about making light bulbs go off. He loves to help people discover new flavors and make the process of choosing wine easy and accessible.
