HAIRY WHO? ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO RE-EXAMINES AUDACIOUS GROUP WITH SOUTH SIDE TIES
Provocative art of the 1960s on display 50 years after debut at the Hyde Park Art Center
CHICAGO – In the late 1960s, six Chicago artists banded together to exhibit at the Hyde Park Art Center. Their work was cheeky, slapstick, transgressive, and highly non-traditional. Radically transforming toys, comics, advertisements, and other vernacular source material, artists Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Jim Falconer, Suellen Rocca, and Karl Wirsum thumbed their noses at both popular culture and self-important art criticism. They called themselves Hairy Who and soon made an international name for Chicago figurative art.
From September 27, 2018 through January 6, 2019, the Art Institute of Chicago will celebrate these living artists and the 50th anniversary of their final exhibition at the Hyde Park Art Center. The exhibit will be the first to solely focus on the exhibition group, featuring many paintings, sculptures, prints, watercolors, drawings, and ephemera loaned by the artists themselves.
The exhibition space itself will mimic the low-brow, non-gallery environments Hairy Who originally exhibited in, with linoleum wall coverings and storefront display cases.
“We’re thrilled to put a spotlight on this playful, gonzo art that’s so idiosyncratic to Chicago,” said Mark Pascale, Janet and Craig Duchossois Curator of Prints and Drawings. “Hairy Who formed in the crucible of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was inspired by works in the museum’s collection. In a way, it’s a bit of a homecoming.”
Often used interchangeably with the term “Chicago Imagists,” Hairy Who has been historically misconstrued as a regional style rather than a collective. These artists mobilized as a team to draw attention to their work - and did so with great success. The six uncanny, subversive exhibitions they staged between 1966 and 1969 transformed the landscape of contemporary Chicago art and injected a new voice into its international profile.
These audacious young Chicagoans created in the midst of the Vietnam War, a rising counterculture, and strained racial and gender relations. And, in a decade where Chicago was largely disregarded as an art town. Their work not only borrowed from the popular culture and visual language of the decade but transformed it into forms that challenged social mores and standards of beauty, nostalgia, and obsolescence.
